Is that Calgary job real? How to check before you apply
October 24, 2026
You spend an evening on a cover letter, hit send, and hear nothing. Not a rejection, not even an automated thanks. Sometimes that's just slow hiring. Sometimes the job was never really open.
Here's a quick way to size up a posting before you put the time in.
Check how long it's been up
A job posted this week is a better bet than one that has been sitting for two months. Fresh postings are more likely to have a real person waiting on applications. Listings on YYC Jobs show when they were posted, so you can tell the fresh ones from the stale ones at a glance.
Look at the company's track record
Open the company page. You'll see the roles they've hired for before and the pay they usually list. A company with a steady stream of real roles is a good sign. A company with one job that never seems to close, and nothing else, deserves a second look.
Read the posting like a skeptic
Vague duties, no mention of a team or tools, and phrases like "talent pool" or "future opportunities" can mean the company is collecting resumes instead of filling a seat. A real posting usually tells you what you'd actually be doing on a Tuesday.
Apply where the employer does
If you can find the same job on the employer's own careers page, it's much more likely to be live. Our listings link back to the employer's page, so one click tells you whether it's still there.
Don't take the silence personally
If you applied a few weeks ago and heard nothing, it's usually not about you. Apply to several roles at once, follow up once if you can find a contact, and keep moving.
