How to apply to City of Calgary, AHS and Government of Alberta jobs
October 24, 2026
The City of Calgary, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Government of Alberta each run their own application system, and none of them work like a typical "send us your resume" posting. Every application is tied to one specific job, deadlines are strict, and most of them only contact the people they want to interview. Here is what each employer says about how it works, based on their own pages. We link every source at the bottom.
City of Calgary
The City only accepts applications for a specific posting, and you can't edit an application once you submit it. You create an account on the City's careers site, pick a job and work through a short series of steps: read the privacy statement and applicant declaration, attach your resume (Word, PDF or plain text), attach a cover letter, complete the job questionnaire, review and submit. The step-by-step guide says a cover letter is recommended but not required, and the hiring FAQ calls it common practice for professional positions.
Screening. You need to meet the posting's minimum qualifications to be considered, but meeting them does not guarantee an interview. Different hiring supervisors screen each position, and the City says every application gets equal consideration. Some roles also require a security clearance, and external applicants for safety-sensitive positions complete a pre-employment drug test. The City says a criminal record does not automatically exclude you, and that it looks at the nature of the offense, when it happened and how relevant it is to the job.
Deadlines. Postings close at 11:59 PM MST on the closing date, and applications still in progress are not accepted after that. Some postings can close early if a lot of people apply.
Timelines. According to the City's FAQ:
Only applicants being considered are contacted, usually within 4 to 6 weeks of the closing date and often sooner.
Most competitions are filled within 6 to 8 weeks. If you haven't heard anything by then, you likely won't be considered.
Applications are kept in consideration for the posted position for up to three months after the closing date.
After a posting closes, your status is updated under the myCareer tab, and applicants with a valid email also get a notice if they are no longer being considered.
Seasonal and student work. Seasonal postings (labourers, gardeners, parks workers) are generally posted mid to late January and close without notice once staffing needs are met. Student competitions are usually posted in March. Firefighter and police applicants apply through the Calgary Fire Department and Calgary Police Service instead.
Job alerts. You can set up a Job Search Agent under the myCareer tab. Alerts run for 90 days. If you get stuck, HR Support Services is at 403-268-5800.
Alberta Health Services
AHS wants you to apply through its online job board and nowhere else. You build a Candidate Profile (basically an online resume), then apply to each posting separately. Per the AHS careers page, resumes sent by email are not considered or kept on file.
What to submit. A cover letter is optional but encouraged. A resume is encouraged too, though AHS accepts applications without one if you include a summary of your work experience. You also provide an eSignature certifying your information is true and complete. You can attach up to 25 files, each up to 5 MB.
Deadlines and edits. Late applications are not accepted. Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time on the close date. Unlike the City, AHS lets you edit your submission while the posting is open, and you get an on-screen confirmation and an email. You can also check your applications under My Submissions.
Screening. Criminal record checks are required for all AHS employees, and the check must be dated within 90 days of the written offer. A Vulnerable Sector Search is required only for roles working with vulnerable sectors. Some positions require Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, and healthcare professionals must be licensed or registered with the relevant Alberta regulatory college. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Foreign credentials can be assessed through the International Qualifications Assessment Service, which has a fee.
Timelines. AHS aims to contact candidates within 10 business days of the requisition closing date, and only candidates selected for an interview are contacted. You can't contact hiring managers directly.
Good to know. Current AHS employees apply through e-People, which shows internal-only postings. Student nurse positions can be found by searching "UNE." AHS also warns that it never asks for fees or endorses third-party training, so any offer that does is fraudulent.
Government of Alberta
The Government of Alberta doesn't publish timelines for its competitions, so there is no honest number to give you here. What it does publish is the process, and it's the most detailed of the three. Per the recruitment principles, a competition runs in six steps:
Advertise. Jobs go on the Alberta Public Service jobs board, usually posted daily.
Accept applications. You apply online, separately for each posting, cite the Job Requisition ID, and upload a cover letter and resume. The deadline is 11:59 pm on the closing date unless the posting says otherwise.
Review. Your application is checked against the posted qualifications. Meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee you advance, and the government often gets many well-qualified applicants per job.
Assess. Top candidates are invited to one or more interviews, and sometimes writing tests or presentations.
Pre-employment checks. Typically reference checks, and sometimes criminal record and credential checks.
Offer. The most suitable candidate gets an offer, and new employees complete a probationary period.
How your application is read. The Public Service Commission's tips say resumes are first reviewed "in a matter of minutes," and that reviewers "are not in a position to guess or read between the lines." If a qualification isn't written down, it doesn't count. Postings that say equivalencies will be considered can accept related experience or education in place of a listed qualification.
Resume. Use a modified chronological format, with the working title, employer and start and end dates (month and year) for each role, most recent first. Aim for two to three pages and don't exceed five. Start bullets with action verbs and keep accomplishment statements to three lines or less, focused on results.
Cover letter. About one page and three to four paragraphs. Include the competition name and Job ID, your contact information, and a specific example for one or two competencies from the posting. Don't repeat your resume word for word.
Interviews. Panels usually have two to three people, often an HR professional, the position's supervisor and an expert in the field. Expect to be asked for specific examples, so prepare STAR (situation, task, action, result) stories and bring a list of job-related references.
After you apply. You can edit your application under Jobs Applied until the closing date, check its status there, or withdraw. Competitions may also be used to fill future vacancies, so the government suggests applying to all related ones. After a competition you can request feedback from the HR contact in the posting or from Talent Acquisition Services. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or hold a valid work permit.
Mistakes that cost people interviews
Submitting before it's ready. The City won't let you change an application after you submit it.
Waiting until the last day. The City's deadline is 11:59 PM MST and AHS's is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time. Neither accepts late or unfinished applications.
Sending one generic resume everywhere. The City encourages tailoring your resume and cover letter to each job, and each posting needs its own application.
Leaving qualifications implied. The Government of Alberta says reviewers won't guess. Spell out how you meet each requirement.
Emailing your resume to AHS. It isn't considered. Use the online job board.
Giving up too early. Public sector hiring is slow. The City says most competitions fill in 6 to 8 weeks, and AHS aims to contact candidates within 10 business days of closing.
