Hourly Wage to Annual Salary in Alberta: What You'll Actually Take Home
November 8, 2026
A job ad says $25 an hour. Another says $52,000 a year. Are they the same offer? Often yes, but the number on the ad is not what lands in your bank account. Here is how to compare them.
The basic conversion
Annual pay = hourly wage x hours per week x 52 weeks.
Hourly wage | Annual (40 hrs/week) |
|---|---|
$20 | $41,600 |
$25 | $52,000 |
$30 | $62,400 |
$35 | $72,800 |
$40 | $83,200 |
This assumes full-time hours all year with no unpaid time off. Part-time, seasonal and variable-hour roles will come out lower, so use your real expected hours.
Hours per week change the comparison
Not every full-time week is 40 hours. A $52,000 salary works out to $25 an hour on a 40-hour week, but about $26.67 an hour on a 37.5-hour week. When you compare a salaried offer to an hourly one, check the scheduled hours first.
Overtime in Alberta
Alberta's Employment Standards Code sets overtime at 1.5 times your regular rate. Overtime generally applies after 8 hours in a day or 44 hours in a week. Some occupations and industries have exceptions, and written overtime averaging agreements can change how it works, so check the rules for your situation on the Government of Alberta employment standards pages.
Other Alberta basics
The general minimum wage is $15.00 an hour. Some categories, such as students under certain conditions, have different rules.
If you are called in to work, you are generally paid for at least 3 hours, even if you work less.
What comes off your paycheque
Your gross pay is before deductions. For 2026, two of the main ones are:
CPP: 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 (maximum $4,230.45 for the year), plus a second tier of 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000.
EI: 1.63% on earnings up to $68,900 (maximum $1,123.07 for the year).
Example at $52,000 a year:
CPP: ($52,000 - $3,500) x 5.95% = $2,885.75
EI: $52,000 x 1.63% = $847.60
Together: $3,733.35, before income tax
Income tax comes on top and depends on your full situation, so this is not your take-home number. For a closer estimate, use the YYC Jobs Pay Calculator.
